Donnybrook Cup: Irish tame the Tomahawks

The USA Tomahawks gained a little insight into the progress they need to make to qualify for the 2013 World Cup finals when they slipped to a 26-8 loss to the Irish Wolfhounds on Saturday.

Whilst the result was a disappointment to the home nation there were mitigating circumstances, which undoubtedly impacted on squad strength. On the plus side the learning experience and the process of preparation and selection sets a template for progress.

Having set a baseline the AMNRL will be looking to use the home-and-home Colonial Cup series against Canada and the associated training camps to hone their push for World Cup 2013.

As for the Irish, they will be pleased to have tested the depth of their squad ahead of the World Cup. Their performance in the 2008 finals earned the Irish automatic qualification for 2013, but their draw in group A pits them agains Australia, England and Fiji. Testing the strength of their domestic players will be valuable in improving the quality of their squad ahaed of what is sure to be a stern challenge.
