San Diego Padres’ first base Adrian Gonzalez is reportedly headed for Boston in a trade likely to involve a slew of the Sox top prospects, including the highly rated pitcher/shortstop Casey Kelly.

The Red Sox, who’s 2010 season petered out in a haze of injuries to key performers, were desperate to land a big-name signing and with the Yankees closing in on both pitcher Cliff Lee and Tampa Bay Rays outfielder, Carl Crawford, the capture of hard-hitting Gonzales will be just the coup they have been looking for to satisfy Red Sox nation that their appetite for success is far from slaked.
