Leeds Carnegie have been given a major boost ahead of the new Guinness Premiership season which starts this Sunday against Newcastle at Headingley Carnegie with the announcement that Fijian international winger Seru Rabeni has joined the club on a one year contract.
Rabeni is well known to the Leeds coaching duo of Andy Key and Neil Back from their days at Leicester. Rabeni joined the Tigers in 2004 and made a significant impact in the double-winning side of 2006-07, scoring five tries in 21 appearances and starting both the Guinness Premiership and Heineken Cup finals.
Rabeni had initially joined Gloucester for this season but the deal fell through and Leeds have acted quickly to snap up the winger for the new season with an option for a further year.
Commenting on the signing Director of Rugby Andy Key said,
“We are delighted to have signed Seru. He is someone Neil and I know well from our time at Leicester and has proven quality at the highest level.
“The move has come about very quickly after a conversation between our captain Marco Wentzel and Seru when he was asking him what his options were for the new season. “He was keen to remain in the Guinness Premiership and thankfully we have been able to agree a deal.
“He has trained with the players for the first time today but will probably take a fortnight to get up to speed with our systems however he will hopefully be ready to make his debut by the end of September,”
