The Barons Brewing Jacksonville Axemen are closing in on the American National Rugby League title.

After completing an unbeaten seven game regular season the Axemen need only defeat debut-season side, Boston 13s (at home, 22Aug2009), in the playoffs to reach the Championship XII decider.

The AMNRL 2009 Championship XII final will take place in Manhattan, New York City on Saturday, August 29 (7pm EST). The game will be at New York Knights’ Pier 40 venue (The Castle) and for the first time in the league’s 12-year history will be played under floodlights.

Both teams received a ‘bye’ into the second round of playoff games: the Axemen courtesy of their unbeaten record;  rhe 13s courtesy of opponents the Aston Bulls having fielded an inelligible player when they defeated the Boston side.

The Bulls subsequent disqualification ended the record-setting run of the Marcus Vassilakopoulos coached team, who have appeared in all 11 Championship finals to date.

The other Championship playoff semi-final will see the New York Knights host Championship XI winners, the New Haven Warriors, who defeated Philadelphia Fight 54-14 in Connecticut.

Upcoming games:

  • New Haven Warriors at New York Nights (7pm, Friday 21st August, The Castle, Pier 40, NY)
  • Jacksonville Axemen (4pm August 22nd, Hodges Stadium, North Florida University, Jacksonville)
