Into the city

Early morning stroll –
Up the Strand to Aldwych,
Left to Covent Garden.

Coffee in a deli-cafe
Scents of ham and tuna mingling –
Fighting cigaratte fumes.

Black cabs and limousines
Battling delivery trucks –
Rush hour warfare.

Potted plants flutter
On their pavement cafe parade –
Soulful music drifts out.

Interminable maze
Finally finding the meeting room –
Posh city hotel.

Hot buffet lunch
Juggling plate, glass and cutlery –
Eating on the hoof.

More talks,
Time trickling by glacially –
Death by presentation.

At last –
Bursting through revolving doors
Into evening sunshine.

A cab to the station
Past famous London names
Planes motionless above.

So ends the trip
In quiet meditation
On this speeding hulk
